The Subtropical Lowlands

Southern Bhutan experiences a fairly consistent hot, humid and sub-tropical climate throughout the year. Temperatures vary from 15-45 degrees Celsius. Precipitation is very high.

The Temperate Midlands

In the central region, the climate is generally moderate with temperatures between 15 –¬†30 degrees Celsius in the summer, frequently dropping below freezing in the winter in higher reaches. This region receives a lot of rain, with torrential downpours during the peak monsoon months of July and August.

The Alpine Highlands

Rainfall

The amount of rainfall varies from region to region depending on the elevation. The alpine regions bordering Tibet receives annual rainfall of about forty millimeters usually in the form of snow. The temperate central regions receive on an average 1,000 milliliters of rain. The subtropical southern regions receive almost 7000-8000 milliliters of rain annually rendering it the wettest and most humid.

The capital city Thimphu experiences mostly dry winter (December –¬†February). Rainfall is rare in between these months till March.

Seasons

Spring in Bhutan is usually dry but very colorful with trees in full bloom wearing a completely new and fresh look. March calls to the beginning of spring which rolls on into the mid of May. Rainfall marks the advent of summer in Bhutan. Bhutan sees plenty of rainfall in the months commencing June through September. The rainy season is followed by the chills and thrills of an impending autumn which starts from late September through late November. Autumn and spring are characterized by bright sunny days and chilly mornings and evenings. Snow is not uncommon at higher elevations during these two seasons.

Winter begins from late November and sails through March. Frost which is seen throughout much of the country, snowfall in areas above 3,000 meters elevation, and chilly winds characterizes winters in Bhutan.

Average Temperature in Bhutan

Average temperatures are recorded from the valley floors. Significant variances are possible from the recorded figures depending on the elevation.
